WHAT IS N.E.A.T
Non-exercise activity thermogenesis ( NEAT ) is the energy expended for everything we do that is not sleeping, eating or sports-like exercise.
Any physical activity completed increases your metabolic rate substantially.
The cumulative impact over a week, month and beyond can have significant positive outcome of the ability to burn more calories.
Many people do have endocrine disorders. ( The endocrine system influences how your heart beats, how your bones and tissues grow. It plays a crucial role in whether or not you develop diabetes, thyroid disease, growth disorders and a host other hormone-related disorders), that makes the ability to lose weight more difficult. However, the majority of people don’t suffer with slow metabolism, but a lack of movement.
Most people consider as long as I go to the gym or do some form of exercise x amount of times a week this will be sufficient. Granted this is the most ideal way to expend calories. However, there are several additional ways to burn them throughout the day without strenuous exercise.
Weight management, whether weight loss or weight maintenance can be made easier with the understanding of N.E.A.T
Below is a list of simple and effective means to burn those additional calories each day.
Playing with the children
Chores in the garden
Walking the dog
Getting off the Bus or Train a stop earlier
Walking upstairs to use the bathroom, rather than downstairs
Wash the dishes, rather than using the dishwasher
When possible conduct meetings outside, rather than in a meeting room or boardroom, you also tend to be more creative this way
Create wellness challenges in the workplace. Most people have either a tracking device on their phones or wrist.
If you are at home, walk around completing other tasks whilst on the phone.
If you are a fan of self development, take a power walk whilst listening.
Research suggest that individuals that move constantly throughout the day are more likely to reach their weight goals than people who have a sedentary job and vigorously move through exercise in one main session.
Researcher James Levine, M.D who has published many journal reports on the effects of N.E.A.T found that adopting these methods can increase daily calorie expenditure by as much as 350 calories per day, and is particularly beneficial for those obese individuals.
N.E.A.T is proof that the compound affect works. Implementing simple health and daily disciplines, overtime can make a dramatic difference to your health and waistline. Why not try to incorporate some above into your daily routine?
